The Play and Learn Foundation is an organization dedicated toward improving the life trajectory of Ghana’s youth using a fun and innovative method. Play and Learn is designed in such a way that the adolescents who attend are allowed to play football for one hour, under the strict stipulation that they remain for an additional hour to practice their reading and math skills.
The organization’s founder, Nana Kwasi Ohene, is a graduate student at the University of Ghana that has selflessly dedicated his time to build Play and Learn from the ground up. He plays a role in virtually every aspect of the organization’s inner workings with the knowledge that his efforts are steadily improving the lives of his students, and Ghana as a whole.
My personal experience with the Play and Learn Foundation was one of great reward and humility. The moment Nana Kwasi shared his vision with me I was immediately on board and taught at a number of learning sessions. It was exhilarating to see the direct impact of my contribution as I worked with the students on a weekly basis and witnessed their reading skills grow stronger. Unfortunately, I had to leave Play and Learn at the conclusion of my study abroad semester, but I trust that Nana Kwasi and his enthusiastic team will continue to enhance and expand upon his vision.
I am honoured to have been able to devote my time to an organization that has such tremendous potential. With the right push, Play and Learn Foundation will soon be a well-known organization throughout Accra, if not all of Ghana. Be on the lookout!
